Time To Choose.

Blatant Sign I Am Getting Older #75: I care enough about elections to talk about them publicly.

My original stance on tomorrow's massively important elections was going to be "Vote Selfish."  I was going to beg you to vote for the candidates you wanted to best serve YOU--your representative to your state, country, and international community; your voice in debate on pressing matters that pertained to you; your proxy at every conference & meeting for the next 4 years.  In other words, who would you want to speak, act, and decide on your behalf?

But after some thought, I'm now asking you to "Vote Altruistic."

When you enter your voting booth tomorrow, in that moment of peace & quiet (I know I'm looking forward to voting for those 2 reasons alone...), think.  Really think.

How will the votes you cast affect the people in your life?

You might consider:

    • Parents, grandparents, and neighbors who are veterans, collecting Social Security & pensions, and/or on Medicare
    • Daughters, sons, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren who attend our public schools, the quality of arts programs in their schools, and the way the teachers are cared for in their school districts
    • Daughters, nieces, and granddaughters who are tweens and teens, and the healthcare options that they may find themselves in need of one day
    • Adult women and the healthcare options that you believe they deserve
    • Family members, neighbors, and friends who are members of minority groups
    • Family members, neighbors, and friends who are are members of the US Military
    • Family members, neighbors, and friends who are members of the LGBT community
    • Our environment and all the ways it should be cared for so that everyone in your life, yourself included, can go on enjoying it--as it is now, or in an improved-upon state--for the rest of your lives
Instead of "just" voting for whoever seems like they've got it together, or whose ideas you mostly agree with, think about how those ideas will affect everyone you love if they are put into action.  That's the whole point of voting, friends--you're not doing it yourself, so you need to pick someone to do it for you.

And also on that note, remember that you're not doing it yourself, so after the results are in, keep calm and move on if your preferred candidates did not win.  If you think you can do it better, you should get working on your campaign because from what I hear they're like, an ongoing, year-round thing.

Vote Altruistic tomorrow.  Everyone thanks you for it.
