There once was a girl from Nantucket,
She knew one day she'd kick the bucket.
She drew up a list,
And then got real pissed
And said, "Bucket lists can go on and fuc...be called Ticking Lists instead."
Yeah, you know, I was thinking about this recently and I decided I don't care for the term 'bucket list,' either. This girl from Nantucket and I have something in common.
Clearly, we're all gonna kick it at some point. But why should I need to see the sights because I'm eventually going to expire? I should be seeing stuff because I'm living. Hence, the 'Ticking List' referring to the 'ticking' of a beating heart. I was going to go with 'Beating List' but I didn't think that sounded all that savory.

I typed "beating list" into Google Images just to see what I'd get, and
David Beckham appeared. You can all go ahead and
insert a joke if you'd like. Ya sickos.

I don't know if I have what is referred to as wanderlust, but I don't especially care for staying in the exact same place all the time, either. I'm fairly certain that if I had an unlimited cash flow, I could potentially acquire wanderlust, though. All the people I know with legit wanderlust have good jobs and no kids. But, I know that I don't need to board a plane, or venture thousands of miles from my home, to see exciting things. Exciting things are happening all around me, all the time. For instance, tonight I got out for some "alone time," and heard a guy hock a loogie about 100 feet from where I was talking. Now that's exciting! More exciting than that was the fact that I think he heard me yell "Wow! Thanks a lot!" in response.
But anyway, yes, so I got to thinking about places I've been and places I'd like to go, while I'm still living, not before I die. This is a glass 1/2 full-empty thing I've got going on here. Here are some places I'd like to see, in no particular order.
Ireland: The Homeland (*ethereal Maj7 chord played on Irish harp, with a choir of children, not yet caught in the clutches of puberty, providing beefy harmonic texture and melismatic movement around the tonal center*)
England

Someplace that has an ocean where I can walk in, like, up to my waist, and look down and see my feet (again)
(Back to) France--especially Provence, Nice, the Loire Valley, and Paris.
Grand Canyon (the one in Arizona...)
Hawaii
The set of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman

Rock Ridge (as in, "WE the people of RRROCK RRRIDGE...")
New Orleans (for the beignets)
(Back to) Asheville, NC--It is the most excellent arty-hipster city EVAH!

So what about you? Do you have the urge to travel or just stay put? What's on YOUR Ticking List?

I thought the Grand Canyon would be one of those things that I'd see and be like, "well...ok, checked that one off the list!" But it was really awesome and I wish I'd had more than a day there so I could do some serious hiking and see it from the North Rim as well (though, you have to time that right because it's not always open).
ReplyDeleteNashville is COOL - if you're down that, consider swinging over to Knoxville or making the drive to Memphis as well...I've seriously LOVED every part of Tennessee (and Kentucky!) that I've visited.
Chicago is cool, but I think it's one of those cities better experienced with people live there. New Orleans is still one of my favorite cities in the country and I CANNOT wait to go back soon. And I need a redo of Asheville since I spent most of my time there in the emergency room of Mission Hospital after my friend flipped over her bike (we rented bikes to explore Asheville) and broke her fall with her face.
As for my own list? I've got major plans to explore Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and New Mexico this summer. After that, I think I'll be about 10 states shy of visiting all 50, so that's my top goal. And then, internationally - Ireland, Ghana, Peru, New Zealand, Thailand and pretty much all of S.E. Asia, India, Norway and Finland...and everywhere else!
Thanks for your reply, Sara! I am envious of your ability to pack up and take off! I'm glad you approve of many of the stops on my list. I'm sorry to hear that your visit to Asheville was cut short. We had a few hours there but I'd love to fly into Greenville and make a whole long weekend of it. I loved it...and the Woolworth Walk is a must-see. It's an old Woolworth store that's been turned in to an art co-op.
DeleteLove that you're heading West this summer! I'd love to see that part of the U.S., too. I'm not all that interested in Asia or India, but I could come along when you hit Scandinavia :)
Travel on, friend!
