A Memo To My Daughter.

Re: Your first musical.

Dear ER,

It is with a happy heart and much admiration that I tell you how wonderful you did on Saturday at your first musical, "Hairspray," at Dada's school.  You sat quietly for the entire show (most of the time on my lap), watched intently, clapped after each song, and even used the rest facilities as needed.  It was an overwhelmingly successful afternoon.

You said your favorite part of the show was "Tracy's barrette."  What a barrette it was, keeping that rambunctious, wild, independent, teased-up coif in line.  Sometimes I feel like Tracy's barrette.

We've been listening to the soundtrack and you like singing along with the "Oh-oh-oh's" at the beginning of "Good Morning, Baltimore," but you told me last night you did not like "Miss Baltimore Crabs."  It's OK.  Velma wasn't supposed to be liked, and you don't have to like everyone you meet.

I was exhausted after the show, simply from being on high alert to your every move and need.  But, as you have done so many times before, you proved to me that you can handle most anything.  I mean, I will give myself a little pat on the back for not stretching you to do too many things before you are ready, but still.  I look forward to our next outing to a live performance.  What will it be?  A play?  The Orchestra?  Performance art in the corner of a seedy little alleyway?  The world is our oyster.

Watching kids perform looks a lot different through mom eyes than it did through spunky-single-gal eyes.  I see each one of those sweet faces on stage and think that not too long ago, they were in their parents' laps watching a performance, snuggling in front of their favorite show on TV, or reading a story together.  It is very hard to believe that you are closing in on the big 0-3.  Maybe someday you will want to audition for your school's musical too.  I would be so, so proud to see you up there dancing and singing.  I would be so proud, I would need lots and lots of tissues.

Anywho, I gotta go get some cereal so we can decide what adventure we're going on today.  Library?  Playground at the mall?  Nap after lunch?  Hahahaha...haha...ha... A mom can dream, can't she?

I love you!
Peace, Love, and Ultra Clutch,
Mommy
