Room For An Update: Colorwise.

Dada came up with the stellar idea to repaint ER's bedroom for her 3rd birthday, which is coming up in April.  I am so thrilled by the prospect of "doing" her room again.  Within minutes of the suggestion, I already had the Behr Color Smart Mobile app downloaded onto my iPad and was favoriting colors faster than you can say, "Where the hell is the paint thinner?"

We didn't find out the gender of our wee bairn prior to his/her arrival, so we went with neutral colors for the nursery.  "Neutral" is relative :)

We took the opportunity to bring on the COLOR!  Dada did an outstanding job on the chair rail.  Above the rail is Behr Citron (400B-4) and below is Behr Lost Atlantis (580F-6).  Seeing so much of the Citron brought me to the realization that it is an indispensable go-to neutral.  It matched with any color we put near it, and wasn't at all over-powering.  I am drawn to lime/chartreuse shades much more readily now than I was before this room came along.  We wanted the baby to have a room that popped and was fun.  Goal achieved!

We kept all of the furniture and most of the accents white to provide a crisp contrast to the walls.  One of the most fantastic color combinations that I saw come out of this project was the sky blue of that little lampshade + RED! + Citron.  Wow.  Life is too short to not live it in color.

Cecelia was awesome enough to make us this valance.  It's beautiful.  What more is there to say?

So where does a little girl go from here, colorly-speaking?  From bold, vibrant, fun, lively...to her favorite colors, of course!  Now she has preferences, opinions, and she loooves her pink and purple.

Initially, I thought, "Leave the chair rail white, pink on top, purple on bottom, done."  Now, I am seeing monochromatic walls, with a light, light shade of dusty purple on top, and one that compliments it under the chair rail, but again, in the dusty purple family.  I don't want anything the color of Barney, nor do I want something so dusty that it's reminiscent of the grape/wine theme that we saw stenciled in so many kitchens, lo those many {20} years ago.  What do you think of these?

My thought is that two purples will afford us the flexibility to change the look of the room in a few more years without having to repaint if ER isn't ready to leave Purple Town.  It's a little more timeless than the pink and the purple combo.  There will be plenty of ways to bring in the pink...and other colors, too!  I'm leaning toward boho-chic: fun, but something that will remain relevant as she *gasp!* matures.

Take a peek at my ever-growing board, Evie's Room Re-Do on Pinterest and see what ideas I'm collecting.  My next post on this project will be about fabric--sew myself vs. buy, fabric crafts, layering colors with bedding, etc.!

Have you re-done your baby's room yet?  How did you decide on wall colors and a new color palate?

  1. I love that color idea - purple rocks I would think for a baby room.
