Sticks and Stones: An Evening with Emily Bazelon

This past weekend, I posted my interview with Emily Bazelon, and I got to I hear her speak at The Baldwin School on Monday evening as part of their Digital Citizenship lecture series.  I was inspired to write a follow-up on my own :)

I arrived on Baldwin's campus as the sun was going down.  The fading light gave way to some great photo opportunities outside!  I adore Instagram and used it to capture and/or enhance my photos with filters & frames.

Inside, I was able to purchase my own copy of Sticks and Stones and get settled for the presentation.  I took a seat in the front row because, hey, why not?  After Emily had finished prepping her things at the podium, I took the opportunity to introduce myself to her.  I gave her a copy of my book The Big Stink! which was pretty cool.  Her sons are probably too old to be into a picture book, but I hope she'll like it!

Since no one was sitting around me, I was able to partake in diligent live tweeting (were you following along?) without disrupting any of the other listeners.  I also had my little notebook with me, so I could jot some things down whilst I tweeted away.

Emily's lecture was relevant and my only wish is that there had been MANY more people there to hear it.  She shared some really salient ideas, challenged myths of bullying (one being that it's a "normal" part of growing up--Emily says it is certainly not), and engaged the audience with her comfortably-paced presentation.  She left time at the end for Q & A and then signed books in the lobby area.

I'm looking forward to delving further into Sticks and Stones and hope that lots of other parents, educators, and those that have the best interest of our collective kids in mind, do too.  All in all, it was a very cool way to spend an evening and awesome to hear such a knowledgable expert speak on a topic that is so important to me!  Thanks, Emily!
